What is LAME?

LAME originally stood for LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder, is an LGPL MP3 encoder. The Open source development model allowed to improve its quality and speed since 1999. It is now an highly evolved MP3 encoder, with quality and speed able to rival state of the art commercial encoders. The goal of the LAME is to use the open source model to improve the psycho acoustics, noise shaping and speed of MP3.

Nowadays LAME is considered the best MP3 encoder at mid-high bitrates and features the best VBR model among MP3 implementations, mostly thanks to the dedicated work of talented developers like Takehiro Tominaga, Naoki Shibata, Darin Morrison, Gabriel Bouvigne, Robert Hegemann, etc. And development is still going on...

   Lame Versions

3.90.3 -> Dibrom's unofficial but heavily tested compile for use with alt-presets. Developed and tuned by Dibrom with help of many original members of this site in late 2001 establishing "the most concise, well tuned, and most thought out MP3 quality paradigm" at the time.

3.92 -> Practically same functionality as 3.90.2 but compiled using different compiler options, which may lead to very small quality differences. --alt-preset cbr/abr modes go down to the low bitrates. Eg. --alt-preset 40 (abr 40kbps).

3.93 -> Do not use!

3.93.1 -> fixed 3.93 with working --preset support, but not as tested as 3.90.2. --preset fast gives too high bitrates. Fixed broken -q0 in 3.93. --alt-preset and --preset are now the same. Somewhat untested "--preset medium" -profile.

3.96/3.96.1 -> Featured an improved VBR preset system. 3.96.1 fixed a bug in the new (fast) VBR mode.

3.97beta -> Latest LAME version. Recommended at last!

3.98 Alphas and ALL future alpha versions -> ALPHA versions are for testing only! These include new code and are not tested or tuned at all. Many things are usually seriously broken or changed! DO NOT USE for anything, except for testing!

   Recommended settings for Lame

   version 3.90.3

Recommended encoder settings:

--alt-preset standard (~190 kbit/s, typical 180 ... 220)

--alt-preset fast standard (~190 kbit/s, faster but potentially lower quality)

--alt-preset extreme (~250 kbit/s, typical 220 ... 270)

--alt-preset fast extreme (~250 kbit/s, faster but potentially lower quality)

--alt-preset insane (320 kbit/s CBR, highest possible quality)

Recommended ABR (average bitrate) settings:

ABR Setting tuned from 320 kbps down to 8 kbps

--alt-preset <bitrate>

Example:
--alt-preset 200

128 kbit ABR

--alt-preset 128

--abr 128 -h --nspsytune --athtype 2 --lowpass 16 --ns-bass -8 --scale 0.93
Different people have different tastes regarding artefacts and their behaviour of annoyance, so try out yourself --abr 128 vs. --abr 128 -h --nspsytune --athtype 2 --lowpass 16 --ns-bass -8 --scale 0.93

Recommended CBR (constant bitrate) settings:

320 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 320

note: --alt-preset cbr 320 is the exact same thing as --alt-preset insane

256 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 256

192 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 192

160 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 160

128 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 128

or ff123's and Hans' suggestion (http://www.ff123.net/cbr128.html):

-h --nspsytune --athtype 2 --lowpass 16 --ns-bass -8 --scale 0.93

96 kbit/s CBR

--alt-preset cbr 96
